Laurel Nokomis School Reviews

I moved from the northeast to find an exceptional school. I am very fortunate that my 3 children receive the attention and care at Laurel. The teachers are caring, fun and very helpful. I am not dissapointed. Oh, yes the resource officers are there to protect and serve. It is wonderful to be in a safe and well protected environment. Afterall, Laurel is a big campus.

My children have attended LNS for the last 6 years. During this time I have seen a school who's children were motivated to learn and eager to please their teachers. The teachers genuinely cared about their students and gave 120% to education, and promoting self esteem. Also gone are the stretch and enrichment programs.

I have been a teacher at LNS since the school was first built. The current principal, Mrs. Nancy Dubin has brought the school to a level of excellence that is outstanding in the district. Each student and family is treated with respect and dignity. Our ESE program is the best!

My son has attended 2 yrs at LNS. The Teachers, Nurse, Counselers, and Principal have always gone above and beyond in accomadating my special needs child. I'm greatful to have met the staff at LNS.

In general... we, my husband and I, as well as our 1st and 4th grader love LNS. I an starting to have concerns about the larger class sizes. My sonn has 27 students. He is a straight A student, but is starting to voice concern that the teacher 'didn't have time' to help him with some math concerns, needing to help kids who didn't understand at all. That disturbs us... Hire more teachers, lower the class size! Sarasota Co. SHOULD have the monies. The security there, with all the troubles in the world, isn't very good. Kids run amuck after school. WE think LNS is awesome , but there are things that need looked at.

I have 2 sons at LNS, the oldest is in the 3rd grade and has been in their gifted program since kindergarten (in my experience they do not only 'cater to middle of the road students')and the youngest is in 1st grade and they are both doing wonderfully. I have been exceptionally happy there, and so have my children. I noticed all the comments on this page were placed when the 'new principle' came and made some changes. Let's face it, we are all resistant to change but change isn't always bad. Their staff/ teachers are exceptional and have responded to all of my requests/ worries/ and questions with timeliness and compassion. Most importantly, my children are blossoming. They are happy, they enjoy going to school and they are learning. Isn't that what it's all about?

The staff is very friendly and helpful, the kids help the adults who visit find the rooms we need to find! Large but welcoming.

My son went to Laurel Nokomis for two years in the late 90's. It was at that time that they decided to used the alternative teaching and I found that not to be very helpful for my son. Laurel Nokomis has it's good and not so good points... the teachers really do care about their students and the way they do learn

Laurel Nokomis School has become a hostile environment for ESE students and educators. The current administration has proven itself willing to do whatever necessary to decrease or eliminate entirely it's ESE program for children with learning or behavioral difficulties. Both children and staff have been leaving (or forced to leave) this school at a rapid rate since the new principal has taken over the administration of this school. The welcoming environment that was provided by the previous principal, Wendy Katz, is no longer there. I would highly recommend that parents of ESE students closely monitor the actions of the LNS administration and become very educated in the concepts of IDEA in order to protect their child from a staff that no longer has the child's best interests in the forefront of their actions.

Laurel Nokomis School has gone down hill since the new principal has taken over. There is no more magnet status. There is no more separate technology class, the teachers have to do this. The lack of communication is ridiculous. The PTO does not let anyone know what is going on. They do only the fundraising and we don't have a vote on that either. We were lucky to find out who my child's teacher is and the classroom. There is no organization and no communication. The parent pick up and drop off is awful. Anyone can come and pick up any child. There is no accountability. It's scary that so much has gone wrong under one person who says is trying so hard. It's just not right to short change the children. It's just not right...

One of the best schools in the area. A combination of dedicated teachers and a strong administration staff make this school a wonderful experience for both parents and students. The program for gifted students is an added bonus.

LNS is a large school that caters to the middle of the road student. It is a school that has enjoyed a good reputation that is now in jeopardy due to a new principal.

The only Police Officers that I have seen on campus are the DARE Officers and to be honest I never noticed whether they were armed or not. However, I did notice that they were extremely helpful and cordial. The teachers, especially Mrs. Blasczcyk, could not be nicer and more concerned about their students. She has spent much of her own time helping my son and letting me know about his progress. The Social Worker, Jim Camelo, is wonderful and tries to help in any and every way possible, as do the guidance counselors and office staff. This is a really good school which demands high academic achievement. I would recommend it to anyone and so would a lot of other people whose children attend or have attended Laurel Nokomis school.

They have cops with guns roaming the campus . .
